John Kraniauskas: Narco-Culture, Narco-Accumulation
In his presentation, Dr. John Kraniauskas, professor of Latin American Studies at Birkbeck
College, London, will reflect upon a constellation of notions that outline the parameters of
a concept: "narco-accumulation". He will do so with the help of cultural materials: novels
and films from the USA and Mexico (and elsewhere) such as the films of Sam Peckinpah
and Don Winslow’s novels The Power of the Dog (2005) and The Cartel (2015), as well
as "narco-novelas" like Contrabando (1991) by Víctor Rascón Banda and Yuri Herrera´s
Trabajos del reino (2004). Crucial to such an endeavour are the geopolitical and cultural
– including literary – histories of the Mexican and US hinter-borderlands. It is particularly
to the history of this non-national "territory" that Kraniauskas will turn to understand the
narco-present.
