The aesthetic and architectural expressiveness of the often archaic-looking rammed earth components is, in addition to the very good room climate effect, another reason for the revival of this old construction method. The different earth-colored structure of the material remains visible and the surface of the wall can be worked on while it is still plastic. The transition from manual to artistic execution becomes fluid. Today's planning is often carried out as a synthesis of conventional building materials such as wood, steel, glass, concrete or natural stone with the earth building material. Rammed earth walls are built as interior or exterior walls in house construction, as room dividers, as a design component, as storage mass for wall heating or passive use of solar energy, in museums and libraries, for garden houses, as (free-standing) decorative walls or walls in the exterior (fencing).
You will work in small teams and build differnt wall components in the outdoor ears of the training centre. The practical work is supplemented by detailed theoretical explanations. Course includes a guided tour to the earth and strawbale buildings in the Wangeliner Garden and a visit in the clay museum.
You will gain skills and knowledge in
• Lift and place mix inside the formwork avoiding disaggregation
• Check and manage the depth of fill before compacting
• Manage the number of passes with the rammer
• Identify the right time to stop the ramming process (touch, visual and auditory control)
• Periodically check the position and stability of the formwork (no lifting, plumb, alignment, tightness)
• Compact the earth using pneumatic or manual rammers
• Carry out remedial work after stripping
The course can be finished by a Learn.Earth ECVET Earth Building certificate, Level 3
according to the European Qualification Framework (EQF).
