A Plot / A Scandal

Das englische Wort “plot” bezeichnet nicht nur die Handlung einer Geschichte, sondern je nach Kontext auch ein Stück Land. Zugleich steckt in diesem Begriff etwas Illegales, etwas die bestehende Ordnung Gefährdendes, was Ligia Lewis zu einer Auseinandersetzung mit dem Skandal als kulturelle Erscheinungsform hinführt, der Raum für Fantasie und Vergnügen öffnet. In ihrer jüngsten Arbeit fragt Lewis, auf wessen Kosten diese Art von Vergnügen stattfindet. Die Choreografin und Tänzerin spinnt ein Netz aus anekdotischen, politischen, mythischen und historischen Narrativen – vom aufklärerischen Philosophen John Locke über Maria Olofa (Wolofa), eine Protagonistin des Sklavenaufstands von Santo Domingo im Jahr 1521, bis hin zu Lewis’ Urgroßmutter, eine Figur, die sie in ihrer Geschichte als Wegweiserin für den Widerstand benutzt. Wie so oft in Lewis‘ Arbeiten, entsteht auch in “A Plot / A Scandal” ein Raum voller Begeisterung, in dem das Unausgesprochene verhandelt wird: Gleichermaßen fantastisch-betörende und unerträgliche Bildwelten tun sich auf und offenbaren dabei das hohe formale Bewusstsein der Künstlerin.

The word “plot” refers not only to the action of a story but also to a piece of land, depending on the context. It can also be a verb: to scheme, possibly endangering the existing order – which has led Ligia Lewis to position scandal as a cultural manifestation. Scandals are incidents of disruption where fantasy and pleasure take centre stage. Guided by the questions for whom this pleasure is for and at what expense, as well as where the connecting lines between scandal and plot run historically, Lewis’ new plot explores the stage where scandals abound. Weaving together historical, anecdotal, political and mythical narratives − ranging from an interest in the Enlightenment thinker John Locke, Maria Olofa (Wolofa) in the slave revolt of Santo Domingo in 1521, and Lewis’ great grandmother, a figure Lewis turns to within her plot as a guide of resistance − the choreographer and dancer constructs the poetics of refusal at the edges of representation. A dance between affect and embodiment, seeing and being seen, the result is a space where the excitement for that which does not fit might find its place.
