Das Böse und seine Ambivalenz steht im Zentrum von Marlene Monteiro Freitas’ “MAL”. Gerade im Theater taucht diese abstrakte Größe immer wieder als treibende Kraft auf. Freitas beschwört und bannt sie zugleich – mit einer Überfülle an Aktion. Kummer und Schrecken werden eine Art dionysischer Ekstase entgegengesetzt. Auf der Bühne finden zwischen Netzen und Gittern Aufmärsche statt, Rituale der Überwachung, Sportwettkämpfe und physikalische Experimente, alles im harten Kontrast von Licht und Dunkelheit, Lärm und Stille. Ein Spektakel wie ein erhellender Exorzismus.

Marlene Monteiro Freitas’ “MAL” revolves around evil and its ambivalence. Particularly in the theatre, this abstract giant appears time and again as a driving force. Freitas conjures – and bans – this force with an overabundance of action. Worry and fear are juxtaposed with a kind of Dionysian ecstasy. The nets and grids on stage provide the backdrop for marches, surveillance rituals, sporting competitions, and physics experiments, all set against the stark contrast of light and shade, noise and silence. A spectacle like an illuminating exorcism.
