Der Film „Jerk“ basiert auf Gisèle Viennes gleichnamigem Kult-Solo-Theaterstück. Der Film spielt in den 1970er Jahren und beruht auf der Erzählung von Dennis Cooper, die von realen Ereignissen inspiriert ist. Der Serienmörder Dean Corll tötet mehr als 20 Jungen und dreht zusammen mit zwei Teenagern ultragewalttätige Snuff-Filme. Während seiner Haft wird er zum Puppenspieler und denkt sich eine Show aus, in der er die Verbrechen mit Puppen nachspielt. Mit den Mitteln von Genre- und Horrorfilm treibt „Jerk“ die tiefgreifende Erfahrung von Mechanismen der Gewalt auf die Spitze: ein Film zu Fragen von Machtverhältnissen, Inkarnation und der Entkörperung von Körpern.

Das Screening ist Teil einer Zusammenarbeit zwischen dem Haus am Waldsee, dem Georg Kolbe Museum und den Sophiensælen. Die drei Institutionen bringen Viennes Werk in seiner ganzen Komplexität im Rahmen der Berlin Art Week 2024 in die Stadt und präsentieren unterschiedliche Zugänge zu ihrer facettenreichen Praxis, die sich zwischen Fotografie, Skulptur und Installation, Film, Choreografie und Theater ansiedelt. Die Aufführungen von Crowd finden in den Sophiensælen am 14./15./16.11.2024 statt. Das Haus am Waldsee eröffnet This Causes Consciousness to Fracture am 11.09.2024 (Ausstellung vom 12.09.2024–12.01.2025). Im Georg Kolbe Museum eröffnet die Ausstellung, die Viennes Werk im Kontext von Avantgarde-Künstlerinnen präsentiert, am 12.09.2024 (Ausstellung vom 13.09.2024–16.03.2025).

Artist talk with Gisèle Vienne following at 15:30
The film “Jerk” is based on Gisèle Vienne’s iconic solo theater piece “Jerk”. The film is set in the 1970s and drawn from the fiction written by Dennis Cooper, which is inspired by real events. Serial killer Dean Corll kills more than 20 boys while making ultra-violent snuff films with the help of two teenagers. During his imprisonment, he becomes a puppeteer and creates a show in which he reenacts the crimes with puppets. Using the means of genre and horror film, “Jerk” takes the profound experience of mechanisms of violence to the extreme: a minimalist film on questions of power relations, incarnation and the disembodiment of bodies.

The screening is part of a collaboration between the Haus am Waldsee, the Georg Kolbe Museum and Sophiensæle. All three institutions bring Vienne’s work, in all its complexity, to the city as part of Berlin Art Week 2024 and present different approaches to her multifaceted practice, located between photography, sculpture and installation, film, choreography, and theatre. Performances of Crowd take place at Sophiensæle on November 14th/15th/16th, 2024. Haus am Waldsee opens This Causes Consciousness to Fracture on September 11th, 2024 (the exhibition runs from September 12th, 2024 to January 12th, 2025). At Georg Kolbe Museum the exhibition, presenting Viennes work in the context of female avantgarde artists, opens on September 12th, 2024 (the exhibition runs from September 13th, 2024 to March 16th, 2025).
