Olicia - Out of the Blue

Olicía ist das Bandprojekt der beiden Multiinstrumentalistinnen Fama M’Boup und Anna-Lucia Rupp. Sie leben derzeit in Berlin und Leipzig. Die Musik von Olicía bewegt sich im Spannungsfeld zwischen menschlicher Stimme, akustischen Instrumenten, freier Improvisation und dem Einsatz moderner elektronischer Möglichkeiten. Irgendwann haben sie dem Ganzen den Genrenamen "electronic handmade loopjazz" gegeben. Fragmentierter, elektroider Soul, verspielter, vielsprachiger Global Pop, fragile Folk-Momente und ein dem Jazz entlehnter Ansatz der Improvisation innerhalb einer festen Struktur. All diese disparaten Elemente vereinigen sie in erstaunlich konzisen, direkten und emotionalen Pop Songs. Alles was dabei auf der Bühne zu hören ist, entsteht im Moment, nichts ist vorproduziert.
Mit ihrem TDebüt-Doppelalbum „Liquid Lines“ (2021) waren sie für den deutschen Jazzpreis nominiert. 2022 haben beide je ein (Solo-)Album veröffentlicht: das Indie a cappella Album „in June“ (Buch+CD) von Fama M’Boup und das Album “Figures Afloat“ (LP/CD) der Chamber Pop-Band Nouk um Anna-Lucia Rupp. Ihre Musik veröffentlichen sie auf ihrem eigenen Label o-cetera (Membran/TheOrchard). Daneben waren beide Teil der Liveband zu Sophie Hungers letztem Album „Halluzinationen“ und haben 2023 für Jasmine Ellis Projects die Musik zu der multimedialen Theaterperformance „reality warping“ entwickelt und aufgeführt. Fama M’Boup ist Teil von Kat Frankies B O D I E S-Kollektiv. Gerade erschienen ist auch „Ich und Du“, eine Zusammenarbeit mit Dota Kehr im Rahmen ihre Mascha Kaléko-Vertonungen.
Out of the Blue
Out of the Blue ist ein Zyklus aus Songs und damit korrespondierenden Kunstwerken, die aus einem Dialog heraus entstehen. Aus Konversation und Austausch zwischen den beiden Musikerinnen von Olicía und Künstler*innen aus anderen Disziplinen – Malerei, Mode, Design, Tanz, Literatur, Film und Kunsthandwerk. Die Arbeiten entstehen in Ping-Pong-Prinzip und finden schrittweise und spielerisch zu ihrer finalen Form. Das Lernen voneinander, das Borgen von Prinzipien, Arbeitsweisen und Materialien steht dabei im Vordergrund. Aus einem ersten Austausch von Ideen und Empfindungen und deren zunächst vager und unscharfen Formulierung übertragen die Partner*innen auf beiden Seiten den Prozess schrittweise in Punkte und Noten, Formen und Akkorde, Texturen, Muster, Konfigurationen und Designs. Am Ende stehen gleichberechtigt nebeneinander zwei distinkte Kunstwerke, die sich komplementieren, kommentieren oder manchmal vielleicht auch nur ähnlichen Ideen nachgehen und sich dabei in ganz unterschiedliche Richtungen bewegen.

here are no clear archetypes or distinct predecessors for Olicía’s very own musical aesthetics. Heavily based upon voices and loops, augmented by both electronical and acoustic instruments, all of which they channel into surprisingly immediate, concise and emotional pop songs. Fragmented, electronic Soul or Gospel, playful multilingual Global Pop, the deep motion of Folk Music, and a Jazz-like approach of creating everything on the spur of the moment. There are no preproduced elements in their production process on stage and even fully improvised songs regularly find their way into their live shows.
Olicía is the band of Fama M’Boup and Anna-Lucia Rupp, based in Berlin and Dresden, Germany. They have founded their own label o-cetera (Membran/TheOrchard) for Olicía’s German Jazz Price nominated album debut “Liquid Lines” (2021). The two also performed as members of Sophie Hunger’s band supporting her latest album “Halluzinationen”. They have collaborated with and supported Kat Frankie on her tour for “Shiny Things” (2022). Olicía has also repeatedly worked with Jasmin Ellis´ Project for dance and theatrical explorations and composed and performed a new soundtrack to Alfred Murnau’s 1921 film “Nosferatu” with producer Assimilation Process. In 2022, both Anna and Fama have released albums with their solo or band projects via o-cetera (Fama M’Boup – in June, NOUK – Figures Afloat). 2023 will see Olicía releasing a song cycle entitled Out of the Blue - a series of interdisciplinary singles in collaboration with artists from different fields in the arts.
Out of the Blue
Out of the Blue is a cycle of songs and corresponding works of art that are born from dialogue – from conversation and exchange between the two musicians in Olicía and artists in other genres, such as painting, fashion, dance, literature, film making, design, or arts and crafts. The works are gradually developed, ping-ponged back and forth, playfully shaped into their final form. Learning and borrowing from one another in the process - adapting strategies, materials, structures, or approaches. From an exchange of ideas and sentiments and their - at times - vague and fuzzy articulations into dots and notes, shapes and chords, textures, patterns, configurations, and designs. In the end, the result will be two separate works of art, existing on equal footing, sharing the same seed, still conversing with one another, complementing one another, or simply exploring the same ideas while venturing out into opposite directions.
