Lecture Performance
In Voices & Witches erkundet die Choreografin und Performerin Eszter Salamon ihr Verhältnis zur Geschichte im Dialog mit dem Werk der Avantgarde-Künstlerin Valeska Gert (Gertrud Valesca Samosch, 1892-1978). Gerts Werk entwickelte sich als eine Form des Widerstands gegen die vorherrschenden ästhetischen und ideologischen Rahmenbedingungen der 1920er und 1930er Jahre, die von der deutschen Romantik und dem Nationalismus – einschließlich ihrer Vorschriften für weibliche Schönheit – geprägt waren.
Aus dem Wunsch heraus, die Verbindungen zwischen der Vergangenheit und der Gegenwart zu intensivieren, lädt uns Voices & Witches ein, eine andere Geschichtlichkeit als die der kanonischen Kunstgeschichte kennenzulernen. Indem Salamon die Begriffe Erinnerung und Archiv neu überdenkt, nimmt sie das Publikum mit auf ein empirisches Abenteuer, das zugleich Zitat, Kommentar und Fiktion ist. Die Vorstellungskraft füllt die Lücken, die durch das Fehlen historischer Aufzeichnungen entstanden sind, und lässt ein neues Bedeutungsgebiet entstehen.

In Voices & Witches, choreographer and performer Eszter Salamon explores her relationship to history in dialog with the work of avant-garde artist Valeska Gert (Gertrud Valesca Samosch, 1892-1978). Gert´s work developed as a form of resistance to the prevailing aesthetic and ideological framework of the 1920s and 1930s, which was characterized by German Romanticism and nationalism - including its prescriptions for female beauty.
Out of a desire to intensify the connections between the past and the present, Voices & Witches invites us to get to know a different historicity than that of canonical art history. By rethinking the notions of memory and archive, Salamon takes the audience on an empirical adventure that is at once quotation, commentary and fiction. Imagination fills the gaps created by the lack of historical records and allows a new field of meaning to emerge.
