Das monumentale Werk für Chor und Orchester von Steve Reich ist mehr als nur ein Stück Minimal Music – es ist eine akustische Metapher für das, was die Wissenschaft »Schwarmverhalten« nennt. Unzählige rhythmische und melodische Phrasen werden darin verwoben, um eine kollektive Struktur zu formen, die mehr ist als die Summe ihrer Teile. Reich nutzt die für seine Musik typischen repetitiven Muster, die sich stetig minimal verändern, wodurch sich das Klangbild gleichsam in Zeitlupe verschiebt. Einem Vogelschwarm nicht unähnlich, agiert jedes Individuum unabhängig, doch zusammen entsteht ein harmonisches und strukturelles Ganzes. Die litauische Komponistin Justė Janulytė ist bekannt für ihre minimalistischen, monochromen Klanglandschaften, die sie mit feinem Gespür für die perfekte Dramaturgie in langsame, schwebende Prozesse gießt. Sie spielt mit der Verschmelzung von Einzelstimmen zu einer kollektiven Masse und lässt den Übergang fast unsichtbar werden. Im Auftrag des hr-Sinfonieorchesters Frankfurt lässt sich Justė Janulytė zu einem neuen Werk für großes Orchester anregen, das im Rahmen von cresc… 2026 und dem »Forum N« seine Uraufführung erlebt.

The monumental work for choir and orchestra by Steve Reich is more than just a piece of minimal music – it is an acoustic metaphor for what science calls »swarm behavior«. Countless rhythmic and melodic phrases are woven together to form a collective structure that is more than the sum of its parts. Reich uses the repetitive patterns typical of his music, which constantly change minimally, causing the soundscape to shift in slow motion, as it were. Not unlike a flock of birds, each individual acts independently, but together they form a harmonious and structural whole. Lithuanian composer Justė Janulytė is known for her minimalist, monochrome soundscapes, which she pours into slow, floating processes with a keen sense of perfect dramaturgy. She plays with the fusion of individual voices into a collective mass and makes the transition almost invisible. Commissioned by the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra, Justė Janulytė has been inspired to create a new work for large orchestra, which will be premiered as part of cresc... 2026 and the »Forum N«.
