The unique ensemble on the Vitra Campus gains an extraordinary architectural addition with the Doshi Retreat: a contemplative sanctuary designed as a peaceful space for silence and reflection. This remarkable project by Balkrishna Doshi, created in close collaboration with his granddaughter Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and Sönke Hoof, seamlessly integrates into the vision of the Vitra Campus as a biosphere.
The Doshi Retreat breaks down the boundaries between architecture, art and spiritual design. Laid out as a winding path, it guides visitors through a transformative journey: beneath the earth, alongside walls that resonate with sound. Khushnu Panthaki Hoof explains: "This architecture was born from a dream Doshi had of two interweaving cobras."
The project offers practical inspiration for a more sustainable approach to building: The walls are constructed from innovative XCarb® steel with low carbon emissions, which develops a warm patina through controlled corrosion. The partially open ceiling with a hand-hammered brass mandala from India creates an opening for light and air.
