“The challenges of rating sovereigns through the Euro crisis: a Moody’s perspective”

The world’s three major credit rating agencies, Moody’s Investors Service, Fitch Ratings and Standard & Poor’s, remain at the center of the global financial system, issuing ratings for tens of thousands of issuers around the world. These ratings have come under increased focus since the beginning of the European sovereign debt crisis. In this ESMT Open Lecture, Dietmar Hornung, Associate Managing Director with Moody’s Investors Service, will provide an insight into how Moody’s makes rating decisions and the efforts taken to increase transparency of the rating process. Mr Hornung will in particular focus on the current outlook for the Euro area, which continues to muddle through, with relative market calm, coexisting alongside significant contagion risk. He will also look at the role of backstop facilities and give his assessment of the 2014 rating environment.
