Dialogue Forum with Ibrahima Hathie: “Is the current consensus on the post-2015 agenda favourable to Africa?“

The question of what comes after the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) has occupied the UN and its member states for some time now. High-level committees have begun to formulate a new agenda to succeed the current development goals. Ambitious, realistic and measurable as well as easily communicable and limited in numbers – that's the formula for the new agenda and the so-called Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). There are claims that these have been drawn up in a broad dialogue in which representatives of worldwide civil societies participated in an open and participatory consultation process.

The Dialogue Forum will be held in English.

Dr. Ibrahima Hathie, board member of the “Southern Voice Initiative” and research director at the “Initiative Prospective Agricole et Rurale” (IPAR) Senegal, will analyse the process for an African setting and the development of the Common African Position (CAP) on the post-2015 development agenda. He will share the results of a recent study and answer the question whether the current consensus on the new agenda is favourable to Africa. Furthermore, he will analyse the role and how the outcomes of the MDG are discussed in civil society and among the supposed beneficiaries in Africa and the much-praised involvement of the civil society in drawing up the new agenda. He will indicate who has been involved most noticeably in the decision-making processes on the SDG and the new agenda and how the so-called stakeholders have been a part thereof. Furthermore, the specific role of so-called “experts” (i.e. the High Level Committee installed by AU heads of state) in the development of the CAP will be critically reviewed. Correspondingly, Dr. Hathie will identify the themes identified by civil society organisations and participants as crucial which have been excluded from the CAP and the reasons for their exclusion.
