Globe Ensemble Berlin: A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM by William Shakespeare
Shakespeare’s comedy classic open air (in English)
Probably Shakespeare's most performed comedy is also the most misunderstood. Mathias Schönsee's new production at the Globe Berlin leaves behind the romantic, explanatory performance tradition as well as the burlesque. Here comes a "Midsummer Night's Dream" that is closer to the author, close to the text (German translation: Christian Leonard).
Four young lovers flee the strict laws of Athens and get lost in a forest full of ghosts and elves, get caught up in the maelstrom of their longings and passions, dream of heaven and fall into the abyss. On Midsummer's Eve, the spirits of nature whirl everything upside down and play their tricks on people, shattering all the rules and reshuffling the cards. A sensual, turbulent round dance that juxtaposes the uniform civil society with the exotic jungle. The ensemble becomes a band and accompanies the play with magical live music.
Featuring Helena Krey, Lea Sophia Geier, Saskia von Winterfeld, Anselm Lipgens, Adrian Stowasser, Peter Beck, Tim Otto Böhme, Uwe Neumann
Director: Mathias Schönsee / Music: Bernd Medek / Set design and costumes: Ira Storch und Katharina Piriwe
Globe Berlin
Once again, Charlottenburg's Globe Berlin will be the airy venue for numerous events in a unique open-air setting. The audience sits on chairs in the middle of the action, surrounded by a catwalk stage made of stacked wooden components of the future Globe Theater. Until the (re)construction of the former Schwäbisch Hall circular theater building at the Österreichpark is possible, the catwalk stage serves as an open-air stage, where the surrounding nature and urban scenery also play a role. From June to September, Shakespeare's “Hamlet”, "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Romeo & Juliet" (all three also in English) and "As You Like It" as well as Goethe’s “Urfaust” and Schiller's "Mary Stuart" are on the program. There are spoken word evenings and jazz concerts with The Swingin' Hermlins. Tickets from 16 to 26 Euros are available at www.globe.berlin (additional costs may apply).
